New Orleans is a year-round tourist destination, so there’s always something fun to do: Jazz Fest, Voodoo Music Experience, Seafood Fest, and many others, plus world-class dining and culture. But since the Big Easy weather can get pretty unbearable in the summer, a fall or winter visit offers the perfect chance to explore the city and catch a Saints game without the heat.

WHEN TO GO

  • New Orleans Saints vs. Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots—Sunday September 17, 1:30 PM

WHERE TO STAY
Most visitors stay in the French Quarter since it’s close to the action, and each hotel has its own style: The Hotel Monteleone is home to a unique carousel bar, and The Royal Sonesta offers rooms with balconies overlooking Bourbon Street (just to name two). Within walking distance of the Superdome, and just outside the Quarter, The Hotel Modern sports a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar during weekend brunch, where guests choose their alcohol and toppings (including sausage, bacon, and pickled vegetables).

WHERE TO EAT/DRINK/CHEER
Cooter Brown’s in The Riverbend is a foolproof choice for watching the game—they have tons of TVs—while chowing down on fried seafood, oysters, and po-boys. If its warm enough to follow the game from an outdoor spot, try The Rusty Nail or Bayou Beer Garden. And if you like to stay up on the action without staying in one place, plan to spend the day in the French Quarter, where you can hop from one bar to the next without missing a touchdown.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT THE GAME
Take the street car down St. Charles Avenue to see all of the gorgeous homes and old oak trees. For pedestrian-friendly shopping, Magazine Street and Oak Street offer a range of store, boutiques, and places to stop for a bite along the way. Start with breakfast at Jackson Square’s Stanley, have a salad or sandwich from Satsuma for lunch, and finish with dinner Jacques Imo’s on Oak Street. Then head next door to the famous Maple Leaf Bar to take in the iconic New Orleans music scene (if you’re in town on a Tuesday, plan to check out Rebirth Brass Band there—you won’t be disappointed).
